What if the love of a sport could inspire an increased quality of life? What began as a simple idea in my head turned into a beautiful reality in the streets of Coquimbo, Chile this week. “Tennis belongs to the elite… Soccer is our sport, tennis is theirs… I have never seen a racket in real life, only on the TV… You have to be rich to play tennis in Chile…” Within my first week living in Chile, I quickly realized that tennis- the sport, the culture, and most importantly, access- belonged solely to a small population of Chile’s elite. I brought 13 rackets, 15 tennis balls, 1 rolled up net, and 100 yards of rope in my luggage to prove that tennis can be a street sport.
